Afraid to Go In

The Lump

Bette Murphy

It had been quite some time since I had been into the doctor for a regular exam, so I was quite uneasy about it. I didn't even have a doctor at the time so that made the decision even more difficult. I finally made an appointment and went in.

The doctor was doing a regular breast examine when she discovered a lump. She asked me to feel the area as well, to see if I could feel the lump, which I did. Since my sister, mom and aunt all had breast cancer and all had mastectomies, I immediately became terrified and began to cry.

The doctor made appointments for a mammogram and an ultrasound to be done the very next day, since I was considered high risk.

On my way home I remember I called my husband, Tim and my sister, Judy to tell them the news as I was very upset.

When I got home I remember getting a phone call from my best friend Linda from high school. We talked a long time and I distinctly remember not telling her what had just happened. I didn’t want to worry her, plus it was good getting my mind off of me.

The next day Tim and I went to the doctor for all the tests. I’ve had mammograms done before but not like this and the same with the ultrasound; completely thorough. Finally they were all done and they had me get dressed and go back to the waiting room till they were done reading the results.

Waiting was a blur to me and it seemed to take hours, but it was actually less than 30 minutes. When they did call us into a room they told us that they had not found anything in my breast. I was completely overjoyed and relieved.

On the way home Tim and I had a very interesting conversation.

One day In June 2008 my wife called me on her way home from a doctor’s appointment. Bette was very distraught and crying. Her doctor had found a lump the size of a quarter in one of her breasts. I comforted her the best I could, she then hung up and called her sister.

While on her way home I prayed that God would take away her fear. When she got home she was still very upset and talked of the fear she had for breast cancer, as her Mom, Aunt and Sister Carla all had breast cancer and mastectomies.

Bette got a call from her best friend Linda in Georgia and while they talked my heart went out to Bette and I decided to lay hands on her shoulder and pray.  I prayed for the Holy Spirit to intercede for her; I did so in a very quiet voice. I then prayed for her in tongues. I did not tell Bette that I had done this and she didn’t even notice as she was engaged in her conversation with Linda. I also made a covenant with the Lord not to say anything to Bette unless she was healed, as it was about God, not about me and I wanted all the “Glory” to go to the Lord.

The doctors had scheduled her for tests the next day; a mammogram and an ultrasound imaging. Bette went in for the tests and after about an hour and a half came out waiting for the results. After a short time they called us into an exam room and told us that there was no lump to be found; Bette was unbelievably happy. The mammogram was done in many different angles and nothing was found. The ultrasound was done over and over and nothing was found there either.

Bette was overjoyed with the findings and so I decided I would tell her what the Lord had done for her. We prayed together on the way home and we know that Jesus healed her and we gave Him the glory. It showed us Gods power is still alive and that we must keep faith and always pray. "More prayer, more power".
